Day 41:

The Divine Names

وَعَلَّمَ آدَمَ الأَسْمَاءَ كُلَّهَا

And He taught Adam the names, all of them

 Surah Al-Baqarah 2:31

Coaching Insight

This verse feels like a sacred whisper about who we truly are. Adam ( عليه السلام ) wasn’t merely taught words, he was taught the meanings behind everything. The inner language of existence.

As Persian scholar Al-Razi mentions, this verse can be seen symbolically, explaining that Adam was shown the names of all things, plants, animals, objects but can also be seen with a deeper meaning,  beyond mere language.

Similarly, Sufi philosophers like Ibn ʿArabī and ʿAbd al-Qādir al-Jīlānī say Adam was taught the names of God, the Divine qualities, becoming a mirror to them, a being created to remember, to carry, and to express the Divine on Earth.

To be taught the Names is to be invited to know the truth. It is a reminder that the human being carries within them the capacity to know, witness, and remember.

This is why, when we come across the Divine Names, we feel a deep sense of peace and remembrance, because it is embedded deeply within our soul. This verse is timeless.

We have learned these attributes, and we will keep experiencing them in countless ways: through knowing God, through nature, through the people around us, by becoming reflections of this loving truth.

“Each Divine Name is filled with divine vibrations that are reflected in everything around us. They protect us and permeate our body and our whole being.”

Daily Practice

Close your eyes and take a deep breath in. Envision being taught the Divine Names – see if it sparks any sense of remembrance or comfort.

Repeat the Names: ‘Allāh, As-Salām’ (The Source of Peace), ‘Al-Wadūd’ (The Most Loving), ‘Al-Qawiyy’ (The All-Strong), ‘Al-Fattāḥ’ (The Opener), ‘Al-ʿAlīm’ (The All-Knowing). Let them become the doorway to any matter in your life right now.

Choose one Name that feels closest to what you need today. Reflect on how you can live that quality, through an action, a word, or even your presence.

Book Reference

“WHEN ALLAH created Adam ( عليه السلام ) He made him superior to the angels by endowing him with knowledge of the essence of the entire creation. The Names taught to Adam ( عليه السلام ) were Allah’s attributes and qualities. Each special divine quality involved in the creation of an object is manifested in that object. When Adam received the Names, all these qualities were implanted within his being, and through them he understood the whole universe. Allah then set him within the world to serve as His viceregent.”
