Silence & Connection
“So eat and drink, and put your heart at ease. But if you see any of the people, say, ‘I have vowed silence to the Most Compassionate, so I am not talking to anyone today.’”
Surah Maryam 19:26
This verse beautifully conveys the divine guidance given to the Beloved Mary. She is lovingly encouraged to nurture herself by eating and drinking and to be fueled with peace in both body and heart. She is also guided to be silent and refrain from speaking to anyone – a sacred vow of connection to the Most Compassionate, the Divine.
Have you ever woken up just before dawn and felt the magic of silence? Have you ever come home from driving in the busy streets and just sat down for “a moment of silence”? Have you ever felt the sacredness of silence?
The dictionary defines silence as: “complete absence of sound.” Silence is also pausing from talking, from vocal expression. Silence is another way of fasting. A fasting from words, from sounds; one that clears the mind and sharpens our other senses.
It is in this sense that Sayyidna Ali ibn Abi Talib said: “Silence is the adornment of the intellect and a covering for ignorance. Through silence dignity is attained; when the intellect is complete, speech diminishes.” Silence here is not emptiness, but completion, when clarity deepens, words become fewer and more intentional.
George Prochnik echoes this shared wisdom, writing: “In its essence, this idea is shared by many faiths. For many people, silence is the way God speaks to us, and when we ourselves are in silence, we are speaking the language of the soul.”
“Silence is a virtue
Get virtuous.”

Fasting is practiced in many traditions. Only recently science has discovered its health benefits. Have you ever tried fasting from speech? Have you experienced the benefits of silence? Helwa in ‘Secrets of Divine Love’ states: “[…] Rumi says, ‘The language of God is silence, all else is poor translation.’ Whereas words limit the interpretation of God to the confines of human language, silence carries infinite possibilities.”
Spend a few moments when you wake up in silence. Don’t check your phone right away. Do this for a few days and notice any shifts within you.
Try and pause before speaking and be aware of your intention; why are you going to speak or say. Notice if your intuition gets stronger the more you remain silent.
“Many people embark on a seemingly futile search for happiness, running as if there is somewhere else to get to, when the world they live in is full of wonder. To be alive is a miracle. Beauty calls to us every day, yet we rarely are in the position to listen. To hear the call of beauty and respond to it, we need silence.”
Silence: The Power of Quiet In A World Full Of Noise – Thich Nhat Hanh
“In the attitude of silence the soul finds the path in a clearer light, and what is elusive and deceptive resolves itself into crystal clearness.”
Mahatma Gandhi
