Day 54:

Slowing Down

خُلِقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مِنْ عَجَلٍۢ ۚ سَأُو۟رِيكُمْ ءَايَـٰتِى فَلَا تَسْتَعْجِلُونِ

“The human being was created of haste. I will show you My signs, so do not seek to rush Me.”

Surah Al-Anbya 21:37

Coaching Insight

Do you often find yourself in a rush, eager to reach a destination or outcome and running on expectations? Moving through life on fast-forward can lead to stress and anxiety, dimming our joy and blurring the beauty of the present moment. When our attention is fixed on what is missing rather than what is already here, we almost become ungrateful. Although rushing may be part of human nature, it is equally natural to return to the slower, wiser rhythm of creation, reflected so clearly in nature itself.

If you are confused about whether you’re rushing or becoming passive while waiting for signs, contemplate the balance we are asked to hold: you need trust, action, and patience together. Reflect on the following:

  • If you only wait for signs without taking steps, this becomes wishful thinking.
  • If you only push and plan without trusting or listening, this becomes forcing life.
  • If you trust and act but demand quick results, this becomes impatience.

This verse reminds us that God will show us His signs, signs that help us understand why rushing only blinds us. When we slow down, they begin to appear: in moments, in people, in insights that arrive exactly when they are meant to. When we choose patience, our hearts settle, our minds see more clearly, and we finally notice the guidance that was always there.

Be inspired by the Divine Name ‘Al-Sabur’, The Most Patient.

“Slow down and enjoy the journey right now. Take time for the people in your life. They won’t always be there.”

Joel Osteen

Daily Practice

Today’s practice is to slow down on two levels.

Macro: Reflect on your current projects or any significant transitions in the process and view them with a new mindset, one of loving patience. Challenge your initial thoughts; maybe the project could take a year instead of six months, or a deadline could be extended to work more mindfully. Remember ‘Allah Al Sabur’, ‘The Most Patient’ and recognize the gifts embedded in the slowness of the process.

Micro: Actually try to slow down throughout your day. You can avoid rushing by:

    • Preparing ahead allows you to be mindful in each action; as simple as drinking your coffee or eating your breakfast.
    • Prioritize what you need to do in your day, remove any unnecessary tasks or delay them to another day.

Book Reference

“The fourth spiritual law of success is the Law of Least Effort. If you observe nature at work, you will see that least effort is expended. Grass doesn’t try to grow, it just grows. Fish don’t try to swim, they just swim. Flowers don’t try to bloom, they bloom. This is their intrinsic nature. It is the nature of the stars to glitter and sparkle. And it is human nature to make our dreams manifest into physical form, easily and effortlessly.”

“Don’t be in a hurry to achieve your dreams. Take a day to play with your kids and relax – your dreams will still be there tomorrow.”
