Energy Of The Moon
“As for the moon, We have ordained ‘precise’ phases for it, until it ends up ‘looking’ like an old, curved palm stalk.”
Surah Ya-Sin 36:39
It’s a full moon tonight, marking the middle of the month, a time filled with reflection. One of the beautiful blessings of the Islamic calendar is that it follows the moon’s phases. Each month begins with the observation of the crescent right after sunset.
It is meaningful to measure time through the moon, because every night it looks different, reminding us that every day is not the same and that everything in life moves through phases. The moon reminds us that everything has a beginning and an end; a cycle that mirrors our own journeys of growth, release, renewal, and return.
Ramadan itself is shaped by these phases. The birth of the crescent signals the start of fasting, and the next crescent announces Eid. A single sighting can determine which country fasts, which waits, when we end, and whether a month lasts 29 or 30 days.
We can connect with the moon and watch it grow night by night, changing shape, changing positions in the sky and keeping us company during this Holy month. This becomes a beautiful practice if carried onwards throughout the other months.
Prophet Muhammad was always described to emit luminosity as the full moon, his love, grace and light captivated every heart. The glow of the full moon is mesmerizing and brings a sense of serenity. Turn inwards and feel the light.
“The lovers of God never run out of patience, for they know that time is needed for the crescent moon to become full”
Elif Shafak, The Forty Rules of Love
Tonight you can see the full bright Moon – ‘Badr’ outshining the stars and reflecting its silvery cooling healing light. Its fullness is a hopeful symbol to celebrate the intentions that have been set at the beginning of the month. It can give a boost of energy to support us in the second half of the month.
Spend some time outdoors in the moonlight and bathe in its healing light. Journal and reflect:
How far you’ve come and what have been the highlights of the month so far.
Write down what you would like to let go of.
Set an intention and prayers to help give you the extra energy to keep on going for the rest of the month
“Everything turns in circles and spirals with the cosmic heart until infinity. Everything has a vibration that spirals inward or outward — and everything turns together in the same direction at the same time. This vibration keeps going: it becomes born and expands or closes and destructs — only to repeat the cycle again in opposite current. Like a lotus, it opens or closes, dies and is born again. Such is also the story of the sun and moon, of me and you. Nothing truly dies. All energy simply transforms.”
