Day 60:

From Darkness to Light

يُولِجُ اللَّيْلَ فِي النَّهَارِ وَيُولِجُ النَّهَارَ فِي اللَّيْلِۚ وَهُوَ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ

He merges the night into day and the day into night. And He knows best what is ˹hidden˺ in the heart.

Surah Al-Hadid 57:6

Coaching Insight

There is a secret to nature, and a reason it is woven throughout the Quran. Though its meanings are infinite, this verse gently reveals one truth: night enters day and day enters night, just like the cycles of our own becoming.

As mythologist Joseph Campbell describes in The Hero’s Journey, we move in cycles: inspired by a call, an inner pull toward something greater, we take action. Eventually, we descend into challenge, into the ‘underworld’ of our lives, where we face our inner dragons. In this darkness, beneath the surface of life, we may feel lost. Yet it is here, in the stillness, that divine gems form within us. Like a diamond undergoing immense pressure before revealing its brilliance, we too are being shaped.

It is the sacred dance of light and dark birthing new realities. Like the Divine Names, ‘Al-Qabid’ and ‘Al-Baasit’ – ‘The Constrictor’ and ‘The Expander’, it is a rhythm of life and on our spiritual path. A heart cannot beat without pause. The lungs contract to expand and bring in more life. Just as trees and flowers surrender to the night and await the sun’s return, so too can we rest in divine trust.

Patience and faith become our closest companions in the dark.

“I wish I could show you, when you are lonely or in darkness, the astonishing light of your own being.”

Daily Practice

Contemplate a dark part of your life. For a while, don’t fight it. Surrender to its presence, trusting that God is showing you something new, even if you cannot yet see it or feel it.

Trust, as the sun never fails to rise, your dawn will come. It is the natural flow of life. What helps the process is staying as close as possible to the truth. Sometimes we are deluded about what is real, and the closer we come to seeing clearly, the more the darkness fades into light.

Repeat this prayer of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH):

اللَّهُمَّ أَرِنِي الْحَقَّ حَقًّا وَارْزُقْنِي اتِّبَاعَهُ، وَأَرِنِي الْبَاطِلَ بَاطِلًا وَارْزُقْنِي اجْتِنَابَهُ

“O Allah, show me the truth as truth and grant me the ability to follow it, and show me falsehood as falsehood and grant me the ability to avoid it.”

Book Reference

“We need a light that has retained its kinship with the darkness. For we are sons and daughters of the darkness and of the light. We are always on a journey from darkness into light. At first, we are children of the darkness. Your body and your face were formed first in the kind darkness of your mother’s womb. Your birth was a first journey from darkness into light. All your life, your mind lives within the darkness of your body. Every thought that you have is a flint moment, a spark of light from your inner darkness.

The miracle of thought is its presence in the night side of your soul; the brilliance of thought is born in darkness. Each day is a journey. We come out of the night into the day. All creativity awakens at this primal threshold where light and darkness test and bless each other. You only discover balance in your life when you learn to trust the flow of this ancient rhythm. The year also is a journey with the same rhythm. “
